Chris’ Devotional

HubbyMy husband is a talented writer.  There are people trying to get him to blog.  It will happen…eventually.   Here’s his latest devo.  Enjoy!

Evil Backwards Is . . .
There is so much in our world and in our lives that we take for granted.  The breath of air in our lungs, blinking which protects our eyes without our even thinking about it.  For many of us we take for granted that our children will have food to eat today and that we can enjoy our favorite hobbies.  We take for granted technologies that enable us to do so much for good and for bad.  We even take for granted the made wonders of the earth and we use and abuse all kinds of resources.  Even followers of Jesus Christ will take for granted the earth and all that God created,  like those who deny He exists or choose not to obey or acknowledge God.
‘For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities – his eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse (Romans 1:20).’  We are without excuse yet the vast majority of the world lives in a self-fulfilling, self-indulgent, God-denying lifestyle that is an endless circle of disappointment.  This way of life is full of evil.  It brings hurt and ruin to families.  It brings marriages to an end.  It brings successful people to ruin.  It brings sickness, disease, and death to multitudes.  It brings false happiness and false hope.  The apostle Paul makes extremely clear the many, many different ways this is seen in us.  ‘They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity.  They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice.  They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless.  Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them (Romans 1:29-32).’  These various acts and behaviors are prevalent among the nations.  Among us!  And this is evil.
God wants us to be part of the solution, not part of the problem.  God wants us to be the opposite of evil.  Evil when spelled backwards is:  live.  I believe to truly live is to be completely surrendered to God, His son Jesus, and the Holy Spirit.  A truly repentant heart is surrendered to God.  Jesus said, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life (John 14:6a).’  Life is found in Jesus, not in the ways of this world.  Life is found in giving, not in acquiring.  Life is found in taking up your cross and suffering at times, not in pointless short-lived pleasures.  Enjoy the provisions of God, but seek His glory and His will in your life.  ‘Command those who are rich in this present world (and that is everyone reading these words!) not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.  Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.  In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life (1 Timothy 6:17-19).’  True life is found in God.  This doesn’t mean that life will be easy, that all of your problems will be solved, that you’ll never be unhappy, you’ll be rich, looked up to, and sought after.  No, in fact it usually means the opposite of those.  But to suffer for the name of Jesus is a great reward!  That’s living!  That’s evil turned backwards.
Jesus Christ died.  He died for you.  Despite your pitfalls and downfalls, your turning from Him, your chasing after futile pleasures and material things, your shortcomings and selfishness, despite your evil…He died for you.  With repentance and trust He offers real life.  Take hold of the life that is evil backwards.  As Paul proclaimed to the Romans, ‘I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes (Romans 1:16a).’  Amen!
